Please read and understand a few things about Italian coins and our process.

  • The lira (plural lire) was the currency of Italy between 1861 and 2002. Then came the Euro. Obviously, the lira is more authentically Italian than the Euro. That’s why we wanted to make earrings out of lire. Thanks to the Italian government buying up lire, each earring is now a part of history quickly disappearing! Italy is buying them back-- paying twice their face value in Euros. IE, THEY ARE NOT EASY TO SOURCE.

  • These coins are from Italy and once used by Italians in everyday commerce. The coins were used and therefore, full of germs. The first thing we do is clean them with eco-friendly alcohol to kill the germs. We then subject them to various polishing techniques which make the coins very hot…and untouchable. The temperature is high enough to kill any germs that may reside on the coins! We then drop them in another alcohol bath to cool and get rid of any of the brown wax used to polish them. We did not coat the coins with metal sealer because in our opinion, as the coins change color, they get more character. A metal sealer would have "sealed" the coins in a permantely shiny state. Again, that wasn't our goal.

    If you worry about money being dirty, don't worry. All coins used in our jewelry are clean and very safe to wear near your ears and face.

  • Unless otherwise noted, all Italian lire earrings have 100% hypoallergenic, surgical steel (nickel-free) ear hooks (the part that actually goes into your piercing).
    Obviously, the coins cannot be hypoallergenic. Therefore, we didn’t bother making the eye pins hypoallergenic. Rest assured: the ear hooks are 100%  hypoallergenic.

  • We made the ear hooks long so that your earrings don’t easily fall out. Included with each pair are a free set of backs…for those of you who feel safer using them.

  • The artisans making these earrings are 100% Italian and reside in The Berkshires.
People from the city are going to think these prices are great. Others are going to think it's too expensive. Just know that a lot went into these pieces. We made them right. They are hard to source. We feel the price is very reasonable. It's not made in China in sweat shops!

NOTE:  Through the years, the Italian government toyed around with different versions of lire. For example, they had a 50 lire the size of a US Quarter and they also had a 50 lire smaller than a US penny! Then there are the 5 & 10 lire pieces in aluminum. If you’ve never held a 5 or 10 lire piece, these are going to make you chuckle. You’ll swear it’s a child’s toy or fake. No, it's real Italian currency. Italy made these denominations out of aluminum and saved the heavier metals for the coins of greater value. However, the 5 & 10 make some of the best earrings because they are very light!
